The Strays

The Strays is an ongoing series of photographs incorporating my interests in still life, the domestic environment and the representation of animals.

Animals have been depicted within the fine and decorative arts since stone age people painted images of them on cave walls. Shifts in the representation of animals corresponds to humanity’s changing relationship to their fellow creatures, but what remains constant over time is the prominent position animals hold in our collective imaginations. While our real, lived experience with animals in a contemporary context may be diminishing, mass produced representations of them abound. For this series of images I have chosen to document decorative representations of animals in domestic environments. These seemingly banal and kitsch portrayals of the cute, cuddly and carnivorous signify our particular connection/disconnection to the natural world.
