The Artificial Kingdom

The Artificial Kingdom is a series of still life, color photographs taken within Australian cemeteries, mostly around central Victoria. The first sectarian public cemetery was also the first civic parkland, where the conventions of fine art, gardening and spirituality melded to form an inclusive secular public space that was sacred to all. The cemetery is a contained world that strives to sit outside the continuum of time. Marble statuary and plastic flowers are all material attempts to hold back time that in their decay, are potent symbols of loss.
